Why I Switched to Organic Underwear

(and Why You Might Want To, Too)

A wellness journey is called a journey for a reason — it unfolds slowly, layer by layer, like peeling back an onion. Each new layer reveals another opportunity to realign, refine, and reconnect.

My own path began almost eight years ago when I went gluten- and dairy-free to heal my gut. I started eating mostly organic produce and switched my cosmetics and body care to low-tox options about six months before trying to conceive our son — over a decade ago now.

But after years of focusing on what I put in my body, I realized I hadn’t paid much attention to what I was putting on my body. This year, that changed.

And let’s be honest — organic cotton underwear and bras make amazing gifts. Think holiday swaps instead of wine or sweets — a thoughtful, sustainable stocking stuffer for you or your bestie that’s equal parts practical and planet-friendly.

Stocking Stuffers She’ll Actually Be Excited About

Because mom deserves organic comfort—not another candle she’ll re-gift. Thoughtful essentials that nourish body, planet, and soul—perfect for her or your closest friend.

Does “Organic” Really Matter for Your Underwear?

We know why organic food matters — it reduces pesticide exposure, supports the soil, and nourishes us more deeply. But when it comes to clothing, especially what’s touching your most sensitive skin every day, organic cotton makes a meaningful difference.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and uses up to 90% less water than conventional cotton. It’s better for the planet, better for farmers, and gentler on your skin — free from harsh chemicals and dyes that can disrupt hormones or irritate sensitive areas. It’s breathable, soft, and durable — the trifecta for everyday comfort.

The Subset Organic Cotton Triangle Soft Bra

…is the perfect holiday gift for yourself or someone you love — soft, breathable, and sustainably made. Crafted from organic cotton and thoughtfully designed for comfort, this everyday essential feels as good as it looks. Because self-care starts with what we put on our bodies, not just in them.

My Favorite Organic Underwear Brands

(and the One That Started It All)

When it came time to upgrade my top drawer, I started with a recommendation from Luci Petlack, whose blog post on The Best Organic Cotton Underwear introduced me to Subset. I invested in a few of their adjustable triangle soft bra’s and mid-rise thongs — and I didn’t regret it for a second. The fit is flattering, the fabric is soft, and the double lining with a front seam adds extra comfort and modesty. For reference, I am a 32 DD. I ordered a small and felt supported and covered.

From there, I discovered a few more favorites on my own:

  • Wear Pact — Their lace-waist thong is stylish yet practical, and the everyday T-shirt bra is incredibly comfortable. (Though I still give Subset a slight edge for its double lining seam — no “headlights” here!)

  • Branwyn Essential Bralette — Made from a merino blend, it’s naturally odor-resistant and temperature-regulating. Some people find the texture a little coarse, but I actually love how it feels against my skin — soft but substantial.

The Branwyn Essential Bralette

…blends natural performance with effortless comfort. Made from ethically sourced Merino wool, it’s breathable, antimicrobial, and free of synthetics — keeping you cool, supported, and fresh all day. A mindful addition to any capsule wardrobe, and the perfect gift for those who value wellness from the inside out.

Out With the Old (and How to Recycle It)

Confession: I still had a few Victoria’s Secret pieces from… well, let’s just say many years ago. Some hadn’t been worn in a decade. It was time to let them go.

Instead of tossing them, I used The Take Back Bag — a sustainable recycling program that keeps textiles out of landfills. You fill the bag with old clothes, send it back, and they responsibly recycle the materials.

But my favorite find is Subset’s own Recycling Program, the first in the world dedicated to intimate apparel. In 2018, they launched a pioneering initiative to make recycling underwear, bras, and socks simple and accessible.

Through partnerships with Texaid, SuperCircle, and Trashie, Subset has already recycled nearly two million items (and counting). They accept undergarments from any brand, gender, or condition (as long as they’re clean) — you simply fill out the form on their Recycling Page and receive a prepaid shipping label.

It’s a simple, circular system that closes the loop — transforming what was once waste into something new.

Why I Invited (ok, Begged) Luci to Teach a Workshop on Sustainable Living

After discovering Luci’s thoughtful approach to sustainability, I knew I wanted her to come teach one of our Nourished Soul Wellness Workshops. Living sustainably can feel overwhelming — especially when you’re juggling family, work, and wellness goals. But Luci has a gift for making it approachable, practical, and inspiring.

Going sustainable isn’t about perfection; it’s about intention. The choices we make — from what we eat to what we wear — ripple out into the world around us. It’s about protecting the planet and our own health, one mindful step at a time.

That’s why I’m so excited to have her lead our upcoming Sustainable Holiday Living Workshop. We’ll explore how to celebrate the holidays with less waste, more meaning, and a whole lot of joy.

Next Up: Organic Workout Wear

This shift to low-tox, sustainable clothing has reminded me that wellness isn’t only about what we eat — it’s about what we wear, touch, and surround ourselves with every day.

Next, I’ll be sharing my review of organic workout clothes — which brands actually perform well, feel good, and align with my wellness values. Stay tuned!

Because what we wear closest to our skin should be as clean as what we put in our bodies — good for you, and the planet.
